Container ships: Evergreen, the shipyard’s best client

In the first semester of 2018, the shipping company Evergreen has positioned itself at the top of the list of shipowners with the most container ships under construction and the highest number of ships overall. It has reached the forty-eight units in joint capacity, 508,332 TEUs, which represent 47.4% of its current capacity.

Maersk, MSC and CMA-CGM, the big boys of the industry, are behind EMC, even considering that CMA-CGM has already commissioned 23 vessels this year with a total capacity of 305,418 TEUs.

Lastly, the Persian national shipping company IRISL (ranked 21 in the world ranking of container ships) is the one with the highest percentage of capacity entrusted to the shipyards, 58,000 TEUs, which represent 60.2% of its current capacity. IRISL wants to re-launch its activity solidly before the end of the international sanctions of recent years.

In 2017, there were 67 shipping companies operating the market, according to data from MDS Transmodal Containership Databank. However, only 10 of them control almost 90%. Maersk leads the ranking with the acquisition of the Hamburg Süd. With it, the company has surpassed MSC and has reached 21% of the total capacity of the world market.
